Living the Truth of My Identity

Good Morning,

This month we have considered the subject of our identity and learned some critical lessons from Psalm 139. We focused on three critical truths. First, God is the only one worthy of defining our identity (not the number on a dice like in Yahtzee). Secondly, we are fully known and accepted by God anyway. And lastly, all your days are divinely ordained by God. Nothing about your life is an accident.

While I’m on a roll, let me offer a few other essential truths about you that God earnestly wants you to embrace.

·      You are loved unconditionally – without strings attached. (1 John 4:9-10)

·      If you have accepted Christ into your life, you are completely forgiven and no longer live under the weight of condemnation. (Rom. 5:8)

·      You are redeemed, ransomed, and freed from sin’s power. Thus, you aren’t helpless. (Rom. 6:17-18)

All the above is true. In fact, it is true whether you believe it or not. Those are the facts. But it is not enough just to know the facts. If the facts don’t find their way into your life, your behavior, and your outlook they aren’t worth much to you.  So let me hit you with the following statement. It is a statement that you must wrestle with if you are to thrive in the long haul of life.  I call it the cold, hard fact about our identity.

Until you and I honestly embrace the fact that we are who God says we are and that’s what matters most to us, our lives will be restless.

As we wrap our discussion on this topic, whether the truths we have discovered make any difference in your life is largely up to you. It will require you to make conscious choices based on what is true as opposed to how you feel. It will require you to begin to care more about what God thinks about you than any other person in your life. It will require you to actively embrace the way you were made instead of lamenting it. It will require you to stop letting your past, your mistakes, your family history, or the limitations put on you by others stop you from discovering and pursuing your God-given calling.

Apply truth repeatedly; relentlessly. This is how your mind is renewed and how you can navigate the path forward with confidence.  It is a path to a healthier self-image, more positive outlook on the future, improved interactions with others and greater Kingdom impact.

Question to ponder:

1. How will your new identity begin to find its way into your everyday life? Get specific.
