Relentless Trust

Good Morning,

While on a flight recently I pulled up the GPS viewing option on the screen on the back of the seat in front of me. It presented me with a lot of information about my trip from Indiana to Colorado including, ground speed, altitude, time to destination, and outside air temperature. One intriguing feature was a topographical map of the route including cities along the way and rivers and mountains we would fly over.

As a bit of a history buff, I started to think about the journey Lewis and Clark undertook across the country back in 1804.  What if they had had the same birds-eye view I had on the aircraft?  What if they would have known up front that the great Rocky Mountains were far more formidable than they thought?  What if they had the full knowledge that Great Falls of the Missouri would require, not a day to portage as they thought, but a month of grueling, painful effort?  Would it have given them pause?  Would it have cast some doubt regarding the wisdom of their adventure?  Of course, we cannot know the answer to those questions, but it is true that sometimes when we see the entirety of what lies ahead we are tempted to choose not to begin the journey in the first place.

We think we want to know the future.  We often wish we could see the picture in its entirety, but I think by the grace of God we usually don’t.  Why? Because we might quit before we start.  We might opt for a more comfortable, less risky path.  If Lewis and Clark had done that they would have not been the first Americans to view grandeur of the Great Plaines, the full splendor of the Rockies or the culminating joy of seeing the Pacific Ocean.  

God offers us an alternative to having all the answers up front, which might well freak us out.  He offers us Himself.  He extends His guiding hand toward us and invites us to choose a life of relentless trust in His character, His guidance, His love, and His sovereignty.  His love always seeks our best interest and His faithfulness ensures His guidance is never found wanting.  Hand and hand with Him, we can cross mountains and rivers to divinely planned places that we may well have forfeited if the path was wholly known to us.  The choice to relentlessly trust God leads to a fuller and richer life than the life that accompanies fear and control.

Whether the path you’re on is smooth or full of potholes, when you put your hand firmly in God’s hand you can approach each day of the journey with confidence and peace.  My encouragement to you this Monday morning is to choose relentless trust.  It is worth it.

Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God.I will strengthen you; I will surely help you; I will uphold you with My right hand of righteousness.
