What Are You Putting Off?
Good Morning,You are probably familiar with the saying: “Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow?” While it is easy to laugh at a statement like that, we are often prone to doing just that. Sometimes it is because we are wrapped up in doing something that excites us. Other times it is because we know what we should do is hard or uncomfortable. The cost of procrastination however, can be extremely high. A story from the American Revolution illustrates this.British commander Colonel Rahl, while at Trenton, NJ, was playing cards when a messenger brought an urgent message stating that General George Washington was crossing the Delaware River. Rahl put the letter in his pocket and didn’t bother to read it until the game was finished. Then, realizing the magnitude of the situation, he quickly tried to rally his troops to meet the impending attack, but his procrastination was his undoing. He and many of his men were killed, and the rest of the regiment was captured.Norbert Quale, in commenting on this event said, “Only a few minutes delay cost him his life, his honor, and the liberty of his soldiers. Earth’s history is strewn with the wrecks of half-finished plans and unexecuted resolutions.”Scripture encourages us to follow things through to the finish. It warns against being slack and lazy. It also says that when we know what God wants us to be doing and fail to do it, that we sin.So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin.James 4:17That seems strong, but God’s Word often has strong things to say. The process of transformation requires diligence and determination. Sometimes the sacrifice is great yet the ultimate reward is always greater.Quayle makes another statement that should make us all sit up and take notice: “Tomorrow is the excuse of the lazy and the refuge of the incompetent.”Is there something you have been putting off that needs dealt with today?Live this week on purpose,
