God is Not Deciding
Good Morning,
If we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself. 2 Tim. 2:13
Somehow, many of us have gotten the wrong idea about God. We think he is constantly deciding about whether to exercise one of his attributes over another. For example, should he be just or good? Should he be merciful or equitable? Should he show grace or judgement? Should he show love or not? This is a serious flaw in our thinking. God never sets aside one attribute to employ another.
The verse above illustrates a truth about God that can liberate us. When we read that God cannot disown himself, Scripture is telling us that God is not deciding to be faithful, but rather he IS faithful. He cannot be unfaithful because faithfulness is part of his very nature. God could not be unfaithful any more than you and I could decide not to be human, because we are human. So it is with every other attribute of God. He is love. He is holy. He is good. He is merciful. He is gracious. He is just. He is present. He is all that he is all the time.
Big deal you say? Yes, it is! You no longer must perform for God for him to love you. You cannot mess up badly enough for him to stop loving you. He cannot, not love you. You don’t have to wonder whether God will be good to you, he cannot help himself. You don’t have to earn God’s blessings, because God blesses us because of who he is, not by how much we have earned his blessings.
Because God is all that he is you and I can step off the treadmill of performance and rest in the profound greatness of God. You can take forward steps of faith in the full assurance that God walks every step with you. You don’t have to worry if God sees you, because you are never out of his care and presence. You can pick up the pieces of your life because God in his unending grace and mercy he will redeem it all. You can be confident in the person you are because God has designed you to be perfectly suited to all he has called you to.
Move forward this week in the truth that God is for you and with you – he has already decided on your behalf.
