Microwave Moments
Good Morning,How many times in a day or a week do you go to a microwave oven, set the timer for say 60 seconds and simply stand there and wait for the little bell to ring? I find that I do that fairly often. I’ll set the timer to warm up my coffee for the third time or heat up my lunch, and then it hits me. I can’t get that 60 seconds back. That part of my life is past and it can never to be reclaimed. Then I start to think about how I spent that time. I was staring at a little timer doing nothing. How many microwave moments are there in your day where you could have said hi to someone, smiled at someone, encouraged someone, enjoyed a moment with your wife or children and yet those moments just disappeared into thin air?Now microwaves don’t all look the same. Some look like a calendar of appointments. Some look like a “to do” list. Some look like the never shrinking stack of work on your desk. All these things can distract us from what is going on right around us. They can consume us to the point where we get to the end of the day exhausted and yet completely unfulfilled. And the reality is that you cannot get that day of your life back.I realize that many of the things our days center on are very important. I also know that time is a very limited and precious resource. So we need to be careful not to waste it. That does not always mean doing more or cramming more into your schedule. Sometimes it means doing less. It may mean blocking out time to spend with your family, taking the time to get to know the person in the office next to you, taking a moment to be quiet in God’s presence. In short, to live more in the moment.I encourage you to let the microwave become your partner in time management. When you set that timer take those moments to think about what the rest of your day or week could look like. It could make a difference in your life and in the lives of those around you.
“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12
