Power of a Smile

Good Morning,

A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit. Prov. 15:13

My wife and I work with a young woman named Laura who has an infectious smile.  When she walks into a room it gets a little brighter.  When she smiles, which is often, it brings a bit of joy to the moment. Laura’s smile is also disarming. When she speaks to a group of people her countenance has a way of breaking down walls that would otherwise get in the way of people listening with their hearts.

Laura is not superwoman.  She is not immune to stress and difficulty and she does have bad days. But there is something deeper in her life that eventually always trumps the trouble.  Laura has a intimate, growing relationship with God.  The source of her smile is not based on the circumstances of the moment. Rather, her face reflects a joy in her spirit. She has discovered what millions have discovered throughout the ages.  God has an immeasurable ability to bring peace in the during difficulty and hope in the midst of despair.  

I love the words of the Psalmist in chapter 40 verse 2: He lifted me out of the pit of despair, out of the mud and the mire. He set my feet on solid ground and steadied me as I walked along. That kind of stability allows us to walk forward with confidence.

I read an article recently that stated, “A natural smile springs from an inner sense of feeling content and connected.”  Interestingly the article was from Phycology Today, not a historically Christian magazine.  Yet, that is exactly what our friend Laura bears witness to.  Her intimate connection to God reflects itself in part, in her smile.  There is nothing fake about it.  It is not something she does for effect.  It flows from a soul at peace.
