Values Based Living
Good MorningPicture this: You decide to build a block foundation wall on which to build your home. You begin to stack cement blocks on top of each other until you reach the correct height. Everything looks good, so you pile up dirt around the outside and prepare to start construction. Then something bad happens. The walls all cave in. Blocks on top of blocks lay piled in a heap. What happened? There was nothing holding all the blocks together. No mortar, no rebar. Nothing that turned all the individual blocks into a solid, cohesive wall. What are the things that hold the various pieces of your life together? They are your core values. Your values are the mortar and rebar that provide stability, consistency and strength in all kinds of circumstances. They provide a solid foundation on which to build. Chick-fil-a founder Truett Cathy believe that one of the keys to success was focusing on what never changes. His restaurants are closed on Sunday because one of his core values was to honor the Lord’s day and on that value, he refused to compromise.Without deeply rooted values you will be susceptible to being tossed around by the waves of life that come at you from all sides. Now nearly everyone has values. The question is, have you taken the time to identify these non-negotiables of your life? Have you looked closely at those things that, when all else crumbles around you, allow the walls of your life to stand strong?I would encourage you to go a step further and write them down. Seeing them on paper in front of you can be a tool that helps you both assess them and assimilate them. This will enhance your leadership in all areas of life. It will reduce the stress of decision making because you will quickly recognize if something is bumping up against a core value. You can them move forward with more confidence, freedom and expectancy.
When you achieve complete congruence between your values and your goals, like a hand in a glove, you feel strong, happy, healthy, and fully integrated as a person. You develop a kind of courage that makes you completely unafraid to make decisions and take action. Your whole life improves when you begin living your life by the values that you most admire. - Brian Tracy
